Due to receiving foreign funds, SUARAM and Malaysiakini are being placed on the hot seat for being unpatriotic towards the country.

Despite having themselves under the government’s magnifying glass recently, SUARAM and Malaysiakini had been very bold when it comes to responding to the so called allegation of being the “political pawn” of their source of funds ever since their existence.

As for SUARAM, apart from being accused spreading western idealistic, registering under Registrar of Companies instead of Registrar of Society didn’t help either.

Nevertheless, according to the Bersih Movement spokesperson, Dr. Wong Chin Huat, the reason for SUARAM’s move to register as a company is because in Malaysia to register legally as a society or political party in Malaysia under the ROS is rather hard.

According to Prof. Mustafa K. Anuar, Malaysiakini was never a foreign influence mouth piece regardless the fact that they have been receiving funds from foreign investors one of them being indirectly linked to George Soros.

As was reported by The Sun, Premesh Chandran, the chief executive officer of Malaysiakini, made a clear statement that, yes, they have been receiving foreign funding. Nevertheless, it had never affected their publishing independence.

With the recently passed and currently enforced bill (on May and July 31, 2012 respectively) by Dewan Negara, the now infamous Section 114A ofEvidence Act 1950, had spurred up controversy throughout Malaysia.

Basically 114A is a controlling mechanism for contents in the internet that is deemed as harmful by the government. Hence, making the law enforcer of this amendment untouchable. Section 114A allows law enforcers to charge a person responsible for as much as sharing contents in the Internet that had been coded red by the Government, let alone owning them.

According to Anil Netto, a blogger and Treasurer of Aliranmentioned that this new law goes against the whole Malaysian constitution's "Innocent until proven guilty". He argues that this law is a mechanism of intimidation used by the government to silence the people from posting contents they deemed as seditious, defamatory, or libellous.

Abigail de Vries, the project coordinator to the Center For Independent Journalism (CIJ) said that due to the wide ranging effect of the Act, from the owner of the content to the provider of internet access can be held responsible, intimidating the people from freely speaking their minds in the internet
